CFRP strengthening service for enhanced structural stability – using carbon fiber sheets.
Strengthening non-compliant concrete columns and beams with SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 to safely support a traditional Thai wooden house and open the venue for events.
The Khao Kho Traditional Thai House project involved renovating a traditional Thai wooden building for use as an event venue, built on an existing reinforced concrete structure. However, the existing concrete columns and beams were found to be non-compliant with structural standards — in particular, the beams lacked sufficient shear resistance — necessitating strengthening works to ensure long-term structural integrity.
The engineering team selected SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30, a high-performance carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) designed to carry tensile and shear forces. The system was applied using U-Wrap technique at both ends of the beams and wrapped along the full height of the columns to improve the overall strength of the structure.
The engineering team surveyed the condition of the non-compliant concrete columns and beams, evaluating current shear and compressive capacity to design the appropriate placement and quantity of strengthening material.
Column and beam surfaces were cleaned and abraded to remove dust, grease, and moisture, ensuring maximum epoxy adhesion between the substrate and SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30.
SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 was wrapped at both ends of the beams using the U-Wrap technique to improve shear resistance — the primary deficiency of the existing structure.
SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 was wrapped around each concrete column along its full height to improve both shear capacity and load-bearing performance, preventing long-term cracking and compressive failure.
