Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About CFRP
& Our Services

Common questions our clients ask about CFRP Strengthening and Smart and Bright's structural engineering services.

CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) is a carbon fiber and resin composite material with strength many times greater than steel yet significantly lighter. It does not rust or corrode and can be installed without substantially increasing structural self-weight — unlike additional steel reinforcement, which requires demolition, adds load, and takes considerably longer to install.
CFRP is suitable for strengthening columns, beams, slabs, shear walls, bridges, and tunnels — addressing bending, shear, and column confinement to improve ductility. Applications span commercial buildings, factories, government facilities, bridges, and specialised structures.
The process begins with (1) structural survey and condition assessment, (2) engineering design to ACI 440.2R, (3) concrete surface preparation and cleaning, (4) primer and putty application to level the surface, (5) CFRP installation using epoxy resin, (6) Pull-Off Testing, and (7) report preparation and project handover.
When correctly installed to standard, CFRP can have a service life exceeding 50 years. It does not corrode, does not rust, and has high chemical stability. A visual inspection and tap test every 5–10 years is generally recommended.
Absolutely. Design by a licensed professional engineer is essential — the type and quantity of CFRP must be calculated to match the applied loads, existing concrete condition, and safety standards. Installing without engineering drawings may result in an unsafe structure.
CFRP has the highest elastic modulus of all FRP types (230–640 GPa), giving the best deflection control and making it most suitable for structural strengthening. GFRP is lower cost but less strong. AFRP (Kevlar) excels at impact resistance but is not suited to compressive loading.
CFRP material cost is higher than traditional steel reinforcement, but when factoring in labour, time, operational downtime, and long-term maintenance, CFRP is often more cost-effective. It installs faster, requires no additional concrete casting, does not disrupt building operations, and needs no corrosion maintenance.
CFRP generally requires no special maintenance. A visual inspection and Tap Test every 5 years is recommended to check for delamination or damage. For outdoor installations, applying UV-resistant paint or a protective coating is advised to extend service life.
Yes, CFRP surfaces can be painted normally using water-based, oil-based, or epoxy paints. For aesthetic finishes or UV protection, epoxy or polyurethane coatings are recommended as they bond more effectively to the CFRP surface.
CFRP should be considered when: (1) overload cracking is detected, (2) a change of building use will increase structural loads, (3) the structure has deteriorated or rebar corrosion is present, (4) seismic upgrading is required, or (5) an engineer's inspection finds the structure inadequate for current loads.
