What is Concrete Moisture Test?
and How Does It Work

Concrete Moisture Test measures the relative humidity (%RH) or moisture vapour content within concrete to assess surface readiness before installing floor coatings, adhesives, or waterproofing systems — to ASTM F2170 or ASTM F1869. It is a critical step that prevents surface finish failures caused by excessive moisture.

Above-standard moisture in concrete is the primary cause of delamination, blistering, and floor coating failure. Testing before installation ensures materials bond properly and achieve their designed service life.

Capabilities of Concrete Moisture Test

Data covering every parameter needed to determine whether a concrete surface is ready for the installation of surface finishes or waterproofing systems.

Relative Humidity in Concrete
Measures internal relative humidity (%RH) using embedded probes to ASTM F2170, providing an accurate assessment of surface readiness.
Moisture Vapour Emission Rate (MVER)
Measures MVER using the Calcium Chloride method to ASTM F1869 to quantify vapour emitting from the concrete surface.
Moisture Mapping
Produces a floor plan showing moisture distribution across the entire area, clearly identifying high and low moisture zones for planning purposes.
Surface Readiness Assessment
Evaluates whether the concrete surface is ready for surface finish installation by comparing results against coating manufacturer specifications.
Identifying Coating Failure Causes
Determines whether moisture is responsible for delamination, blistering, or existing coating failure, enabling accurate repair planning.
Standard Test Reports
Delivered with moisture maps, ASTM benchmark comparisons, and recommendations for proceeding or for appropriate remediation.

Concrete Moisture Test Process

A systematic workflow from site survey through to report delivery with moisture maps and actionable recommendations.

1
Site Survey & Planning
Test area surveyed, measurement point locations planned for even coverage, and equipment prepared to ASTM F2170 or ASTM F1869.
2
Moisture Measurement Setup
Holes drilled and humidity probes embedded (ASTM F2170), or Calcium Chloride kits installed on the concrete surface (ASTM F1869) for the required dwell time.
3
Readings & Data Recording
Humidity readings (%RH) taken from probes, or Calcium Chloride weighed to calculate MVER — all values recorded with precise location coordinates.
4
Report Delivery
Report prepared with moisture maps, standard benchmark comparisons, and recommendations for proceeding or appropriate remediation.
Concrete Moisture Test Application

Suitable for Which Types of Work

Concrete Moisture Test is an essential step before all surface finish and waterproofing works, ensuring quality outcomes and standard service life.

01
Confirming readiness before installing Epoxy or Polyurethane floor coatings to prevent delamination and blistering caused by excessive moisture.
02
Assessing concrete floors before laying tiles, marble, or timber flooring to ensure adhesives bond permanently.
03
Testing before waterproofing system installation on rooftop slabs, floors, or concrete walls to ensure the system performs at maximum effectiveness.
04
Analysing the cause of delamination or damage in existing coatings to determine whether moisture or another factor is responsible.
05
Used alongside Half Cell Potential and Ferro Scan as part of a Comprehensive Building Inspection Programme for ageing concrete structures.
