Rebound Hammer Test — Schmidt Hammer NDT

What is a Rebound Hammer Test?
And How Does It Work?

The Rebound Hammer Test — also known as the Schmidt Hammer Test — is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that measures the rebound value of an impact hammer on a concrete surface. The result is used to assess surface hardness and estimate the compressive strength of concrete without drilling or damaging the structure.

Rapidly estimates concrete compressive strength (fc') and assesses uniformity of concrete quality — ideal for engineers, building inspectors, and contractors evaluating existing concrete structures.

Capabilities of Rebound Hammer Test

Results cover every parameter engineers need to assess concrete quality and uniformity across a structure.

Concrete Surface Hardness (Rebound Value)
Measures the rebound value (R-value) of the impact hammer, which directly correlates to the surface hardness and strength of the concrete.
Estimated Compressive Strength (fc')
Converts Rebound Values into an estimated compressive strength (MPa / ksc) to assess whether the concrete meets the specified design strength.
Concrete Uniformity
Assesses the uniformity of concrete quality across individual test locations, clearly identifying areas where hardness deviates significantly from the average.
Identification of Weak Concrete Areas
Pinpoints locations where concrete strength falls below the required standard, enabling targeted repair or strengthening planning.
Concrete Quality Map (Strength Map)
Produces a colour-coded strength map across the entire structural area, providing a clear visual basis for repair and remediation decisions.
Standard Test Report
Delivers a complete inspection report including Rebound Value tables, a Strength Map, and recommendations certified by a licensed engineer.

The Rebound Hammer Test Process

A systematic process from surface preparation through to the delivery of the completed test report.

1
Define Test Locations
Survey the area, plan test point locations to cover the full structure, and prepare the concrete surface to the required standard of cleanliness and smoothness.
2
Conduct the Test
Apply the Schmidt Hammer to each test point with a minimum of 10 impacts, recording the Rebound Value at every location.
3
Analysis & Data Conversion
Calculate average Rebound Values, convert them into estimated compressive strengths, and produce a Strength Map of the structure.
4
Deliver Report
Prepare a complete test report with recommendations, certified and signed by a licensed engineer.
Rebound Hammer Test Application

What Types of Work Is It Suitable For?

The Rebound Hammer Test is a versatile NDT tool applicable across a wide range of structural engineering and quality control scenarios.

01
Assess concrete quality prior to building handover to confirm that the specified contractual strength has been achieved.
02
Verify the uniformity of concrete quality in columns, beams, slabs, and walls across the structure.
03
Identify areas requiring further investigation by Concrete Coring to confirm actual in-situ strength.
04
Assess structural damage following an exceptional event such as fire, flood, or earthquake.
05
Used alongside other inspections as part of a Due Diligence programme for property acquisition, sale, or renovation.
