What is Concrete Coring?
and How Does It Work

Concrete Coring is the process of extracting core samples from actual structures — such as slabs, walls, or columns — using a Diamond Core Drill, then sending those samples to a laboratory for the most accurate measurement of compressive strength, permeability, and material properties.

Obtaining samples from the actual structure means test results truly reflect the in-situ concrete condition — unlike non-destructive testing (NDT). Ideal for forensic engineering investigations, assessment of existing buildings, and construction quality control.

Capabilities of Concrete Coring

Test results covering every parameter engineers need — compressive strength, durability, and material composition — for accurate, informed decision-making.

Compressive Strength Testing
Tests concrete compressive strength to ASTM C42 to confirm the structure has sufficient load-bearing capacity as designed.
Water Permeability Testing
Evaluates resistance to water and chemical ingress — a key indicator of the structure's long-term durability.
Material Composition Analysis
Analyses water-to-cement ratio, cement content, and aggregate proportions to assess the quality of the concrete mix.
Forensic Engineering Investigation
Provides evidence to determine the cause of structural damage, cracking, or failure in legal and insurance proceedings.
Construction Quality Control
Verifies that as-built concrete meets the properties specified in the contract and applicable standards.
Remaining Service Life Assessment
Test results are used to estimate the remaining service life of the structure, enabling effective maintenance planning.

Concrete Coring Process

A systematic workflow from initial site survey and core extraction through to laboratory testing and final report delivery.

1
Survey & Core Location Marking
Structure survey, Ferro Scan used to locate and avoid rebar, and drilling positions marked in accordance with standards.
2
Core Drilling
Diamond Core Drill used to extract concrete samples to specified diameter and depth with care, causing no damage to the structure.
3
Sample Preparation & Testing
Samples trimmed to ASTM C42 requirements and submitted to the laboratory for compressive strength and other property testing.
4
Report & Recommendations
Full test report prepared with comparative analysis against standards and recommendations for next steps.
Concrete Coring Application

Suitable for Which Types of Work

Concrete Coring is the most accurate testing method for assessing concrete quality, applicable to all structure types from general buildings to large-scale infrastructure.

01
Verifying compressive strength of existing buildings requiring extension or additional load, to confirm the capacity of the original structure.
02
Providing evidence for forensic engineering investigations into structural damage, cracking, or failure requiring cause determination.
03
Quality control for large-scale construction projects such as bridges, high-rise buildings, and infrastructure to ensure compliance with contract specifications.
04
Assessing concrete condition in areas affected by corrosion, flooding, or fire to inform repair or demolition decisions.
05
Used alongside Rebound Hammer Test and Half Cell Potential as part of a Comprehensive Structural Assessment programme.
