What is Half Cell Potential Test?
And How Does It Work?

Half Cell Potential Test is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that measures the electrochemical half-cell potential of reinforcing steel embedded in concrete. It assesses the probability of active corrosion occurring in accordance with ASTM C876, without any need to drill or damage the structure.

Used to evaluate the probability of rust and corrosion in reinforcing steel, helping engineers plan maintenance and extend the service life of concrete structures. Ideal for bridges, aged buildings, and infrastructure requiring durability assessment.

Capabilities of Half Cell Potential Test

Results cover every parameter engineers need to assess the corrosion status and durability of reinforced concrete structures.

Rebar Electrical Potential (Half Cell Potential)
Measures the electrical potential of reinforcing steel in concrete in mV relative to a reference electrode, assessing corrosion status at each test point.
Corrosion Probability Assessment
Converts mV readings into corrosion probability levels per ASTM C876, clearly identifying the risk category at each location.
Potential Contour Map
Produces a colour-coded map showing the spatial distribution of potential values across the structure, clearly identifying high- and low-risk zones.
Identification of High-Risk Corrosion Zones
Pinpoints rebar locations with a high probability of active rusting, enabling targeted repair planning and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Service Life Assessment
Uses potential data to evaluate the remaining durability and service life of the structure, supporting long-term maintenance planning.
Standard Inspection Report
Delivers a complete report including the Potential Contour Map, ASTM C876 analysis, and maintenance recommendations certified by a licensed engineer.

The Half Cell Potential Test Process

A systematic workflow from site survey through to full report delivery with Potential Contour Map.

1
Site Survey & Grid Layout
Survey the structure, identify rebar positions, and plan a measurement grid covering the full area to be inspected.
2
Equipment Setup & Measurement
Connect lead wires to the rebar, place the reference electrode on the concrete surface, and record potential values (mV) at each grid point.
3
Analysis & Contour Mapping
Process the recorded data, generate the Potential Contour Map, and evaluate corrosion risk levels in accordance with ASTM C876.
4
Report Delivery
Prepare and deliver the full inspection report with Contour Map, analysis values, and maintenance recommendations, certified by a licensed engineer.
Half Cell Potential Test Application

What Types of Work Is It Suited For?

Half Cell Potential Test is a versatile NDT tool widely used in corrosion assessment and durability evaluation of reinforced concrete structures.

01
Inspection of bridges and infrastructure affected by moisture and chloride exposure that accelerates rebar deterioration.
02
Assessment of aged concrete buildings showing surface cracking or rust staining to determine the true extent of corrosion damage.
03
Inspection of structures in coastal or saline environments where the risk of rebar corrosion is significantly elevated.
04
Combined with Ferro Scan and Rebound Hammer Test as part of a Comprehensive Structural Assessment programme.
05
Planning repair works and Cathodic Protection for structures where reinforcing steel is at risk of corrosion.
