OLD BUILDING OF
RAJABHAT

Structural strengthening of columns and beams of a 3-storey reinforced concrete building over 100 years old, dating from the reign of King Rama V, using SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL512 and SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 to preserve its architectural heritage and elevate structural safety.

Project Overview

This project involved the structural strengthening of a 3-storey reinforced concrete building over 100 years old within Rajabhat College, which has stood since the reign of King Rama V. Construction methods of that era did not meet current structural standards, making reinforcement essential to ensure the building can continue to be used safely while fully preserving its architectural heritage.

Strengthening Objectives

  • Improve the load-bearing capacity of columns and beams
  • Resist shear forces and prevent cracking at critical zones
  • Bring the building into compliance with current structural engineering standards
  • Preserve the original structure for new use after restoration

Installation Process

  1. 1

    Structural Condition Inspection & Analysis

The engineering team surveyed the condition of every column and beam, checking for cracks, deterioration, and load capacity of the 100+ year-old structure, in order to design a strengthening approach that does not affect the original architectural form.

  2. 2

    Concrete Surface Preparation for Adhesion

All column and beam surfaces were thoroughly cleaned — removing dust, grease, old paint, and deteriorated sections — and levelled to ensure maximum epoxy bond strength with the CFRP materials.

  3. 3

CFRP Installation Across Column and Beam System

SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL512 was installed under beams to enhance flexural strength, and SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 was applied as U-Wrap at beam ends to resist shear forces, while full-height column wrapping with SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 was carried out to increase vertical and lateral load resistance.

  4. 4

Quality Verification by Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Non-Destructive Testing was conducted at every installation point to confirm bond integrity and verify that the structural strengthening complies with current structural engineering standards.

Strengthening Materials Used

1

SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL512 — Flexural Strengthening under Beams

Carbon fibre reinforcement strip (CFRP) installed under beams to increase longitudinal tensile force, enhance flexural strength, and prevent beam failure in the aged building where installation space is limited.
  • Installed under beams (Beam Flexure)
  • Increases longitudinal tensile and flexural strength
  • Ideal for heritage building restoration
  • Bonded with specialist epoxy adhesive
2

SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 — U-Wrap at Beam Ends + Full Column Wrapping

Carbon fibre reinforcement sheet (CFRP) used in two configurations: U-Wrap at both beam ends to resist shear forces, and full-height column wrapping to increase vertical and lateral load resistance.
  • U-Wrap at beam ends to resist shear forces
  • Full-height column wrapping
  • Increases vertical and lateral load resistance
  • Prevents cracking and extends building lifespan
