CFRP strengthening service for enhanced structural stability – using carbon fiber sheets.
Structural strengthening of slabs and beams at Akara Hotel Pattaya using SMARTFIBER STRIP TL1020 and SMARTFIBER SHEET US-58 to support an additional 600 kg/m² load from a large Japanese-style onsen suite.
Akara Hotel Pattaya planned to convert part of the ground floor into a large Japanese-style onsen suite, which carries significant load from the water system and high occupancy. The engineering team needed to strengthen the existing structure to increase its load-bearing capacity by an additional 600 kilograms per square metre (kg/m²).
Increase the load-bearing capacity of slabs and beams
Prevent cracking or deflection of the slab under heavy water loads
Bring the structure up to hotel-grade safety standards
Support long-term operation of the onsen facility
The engineering team calculated and analyzed the existing slab and beam capacity, then designed a strengthening scheme to safely support the 600 kg/m² onsen load.
All slab and beam surfaces were thoroughly cleaned — removing dust, oil, and deteriorated material — to ensure maximum epoxy adhesion with the CFRP.
SMARTFIBER SHEET US-58 was applied to the top and bottom of the slab. SMARTFIBER STRIP TL1020 was bonded to the beam soffit, with SMARTFIBER SHEET US-58 U-wrapped at beam ends to increase shear resistance.
NDT was performed at every installation point to confirm bond integrity and certify that the structure is ready to safely carry the onsen load.
