Project Overview

Akara Hotel Pattaya planned to convert part of the ground floor into a large Japanese-style onsen suite, which carries significant load from the water system and high occupancy. The engineering team needed to strengthen the existing structure to increase its load-bearing capacity by an additional 600 kilograms per square metre (kg/m²).

Strengthening Objectives

  1. Increase the load-bearing capacity of slabs and beams

  2. Prevent cracking or deflection of the slab under heavy water loads

  3. Bring the structure up to hotel-grade safety standards

  4. Support long-term operation of the onsen facility

Installation Process

  1. 1

    Structural Analysis by Specialist Engineers

The engineering team calculated and analyzed the existing slab and beam capacity, then designed a strengthening scheme to safely support the 600 kg/m² onsen load.

  2. 2

    Concrete Surface Preparation

All slab and beam surfaces were thoroughly cleaned — removing dust, oil, and deteriorated material — to ensure maximum epoxy adhesion with the CFRP.

  3. 3

    CFRP Installation with High-Performance Epoxy

SMARTFIBER SHEET US-58 was applied to the top and bottom of the slab. SMARTFIBER STRIP TL1020 was bonded to the beam soffit, with SMARTFIBER SHEET US-58 U-wrapped at beam ends to increase shear resistance.

  4. 4

    Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Verification

NDT was performed at every installation point to confirm bond integrity and certify that the structure is ready to safely carry the onsen load.

Materials Used

1

SMARTFIBER SHEET US-58 — Slab Strengthening & Beam-End U-wrap

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet applied to both the top and bottom of the concrete slab, and U-wrapped at beam ends to increase shear resistance — supporting the heavy load from the large onsen water basin.
  • Applied to slab top and bottom surfaces
  • U-wrap at beam ends for shear resistance
  • Increases slab flexural and compressive strength
  • Lightweight — adds no significant structural weight
2

SMARTFIBER STRIP TL1020 — Beam Soffit Strengthening

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strip bonded to the beam soffit to increase longitudinal tensile capacity, reducing the risk of beam failure under the high loads generated by the onsen water system.
  • Bonded to beam soffit (flexural strengthening)
  • Increases longitudinal tensile capacity
  • Reduces risk of beam failure under high load
  • Bonded with specialist structural epoxy adhesive
