CFRP strengthening service for enhanced structural stability – using carbon fiber sheets.
Structural strengthening around a large concrete slab opening using SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL1020 to safely support escalator installation without affecting the primary structure.
To accommodate escalator installation in a commercial or public building in continuous use, a large opening must be cut into the concrete slab — which reduces the structural capacity of the surrounding area. The engineering team was engaged to strengthen the structure around the opening so it could safely carry the load of the escalator system and its users.
Prevent cracking from shear and flexural forces around the opening edge
Restore and increase slab strength in the opening perimeter zone
Support the dead and live loads from the escalator system and its users
Ensure long-term structural safety and stability without demolition
The engineering team assessed the existing structural condition and cleaned the concrete surface around the opening — removing dust, grease, and moisture — to achieve maximum epoxy adhesion with SMARTFIBER-STRIP.
SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL1020 strips were applied around the opening perimeter following the engineer's design layout, bonded with a high-performance epoxy resin to add tensile capacity and resist shear and flexural forces.
Non-destructive testing was performed at every installation point to confirm bond integrity and verify the load-bearing capacity of the strengthened structure.
A full load test was carried out to confirm that the structure around the opening could safely carry the escalator system weight and user loads before project handover.
