Boonthavorn –Structural Reinforcement of Large Floor Opening for Escalator Installation

Project Overview

In many commercial and public buildings, the installation of escalators requires creating large openings in existing concrete slabs. These modifications significantly affect the surrounding structural integrity, requiring professional reinforcement to ensure long-term safety and functionality.

Materials Used

Commonly used advanced composite systems include:

  • SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL1012 or TL1020 – For high-tensile strengthening along structural lines
  • SMARTFIBER-SHEET UT70-30 – For multidirectional reinforcement of slab areas
  • High-performance epoxy adhesives – To bond CFRP materials to the existing structure

🛠️ Installation Process

  1. Surface preparation of the slab around the opening
  2. Bonding of reinforcement strips and sheets using epoxy
  3. Quality control via Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
  4. Optional load testing to validate capacity

✅ Results and Benefits

  • Safe support of escalator loads and dynamic traffic
  • Crack prevention and stress control around critical areas
  • Efficient, non-invasive reinforcement with minimal downtime
  • Reliable structural upgrade for long-term building performance

Project Detail

Project: Boonthavorn

Materials Used : SMARTFIBER-STRIP TL1020

Objectives of Reinforcement

  • Prevent cracking from concentrated loads
  • Increase shear and flexural strength around the slab opening
  • Support the escalator’s weight and dynamic foot traffic
  • Ensure long-term stability without compromising architectural design
